AI visibility
AI visibility for law firms
AI visibility describes whether, where and how a law firm appears when people use AI systems to ask questions relevant to the firm's services, lawyers, markets or expertise.
What is AI visibility for a law firm?
It is the measurable presence and treatment of a firm in AI-generated answers to relevant questions — across prompts, AI systems, practice areas, markets and time. It is a pattern across observations, not a single result.
What AI visibility is not
- One ranking
- One screenshot
- One provider
- One prompt
- One permanent position
- One citation
- One optimisation score
Search, answer, recommendation
Search → options → Answer → synthesis → Recommendation → consideration set
Search engines return options for the user to evaluate. AI answers synthesise those options. When a user asks for a recommendation, an AI system may narrow them into a consideration set.
AI has not replaced search, and people use both. But the closer AI gets to recommendation, the more it matters which firms enter that consideration set and how they are described.
Dimensions of AI visibility
- Appearance — Does the firm enter the substantive response?
- Treatment — How is the firm presented — mentioned, suggested, recommended?
- Prompt coverage — Across which client questions does it appear?
- Model coverage — Across which AI providers?
- Stability — Does the firm reappear when questions are repeated?
- Recommendation frequency — How often is it recommended in repeated relevant observations?
- Cross-model consensus — Do different systems agree?
- Source landscape — What information surrounds the answer?
Branded and unbranded prompts
- Branded
- What can you tell me about Firm X?
- Unbranded
- Which firms should I consider for this legal problem?
These answer different questions. A branded prompt tests what an AI system says about a firm it has been told about. An unbranded prompt tests whether the firm enters the consideration set unprompted. FirmRanker does not confuse brand recognition with unprompted visibility.
What a law firm can conclude
- Can responsibly conclude — It appeared in a defined observation; it was treated a certain way; certain competitors appeared; particular sources were retrieved or cited; repeated studies produced a pattern.
- Cannot automatically conclude — That a citation caused the recommendation; that one page change caused visibility; that a result is permanent; that it “ranks #1 in ChatGPT”; that a tactic will generalise across models.
Is one ChatGPT result a ranking?
No. A single AI response is an observation, not a ranking. Outputs vary by model, prompt, context and time.
Measure before you optimise
Measure → Diagnose → Improve → Re-measure → Learn
Optimisation without a baseline measurement makes causality difficult to assess. If a firm changes its website and later appears more often, it cannot tell whether the change, a model update or ordinary variability was responsible — unless it measured first.
