Why AI citations need careful interpretation
Seeing a source near an AI answer does not tell you that the source caused the answer. FirmRanker keeps these relationships separate.
Five different relationships
Searched → Retrieved → Cited → Associated → Causal
- Searched — The system issued a search query, where the provider exposes it.
- Retrieved — A source was returned during search or retrieval.
- Cited — The source is explicitly linked or referenced in the answer.
- Associated — The source has an independent relationship with a firm — a profile, article or listing about it.
- Causal — The source caused the firm to be surfaced. This cannot be established from observation alone.
Why they should not be conflated
Citation shows that a source was cited. It does not prove that the source caused the recommendation.
Providers expose retrieval differently; some show citations, some show search queries, some show little. A citation tells you the system chose to reference a source. It does not tell you how much that source weighed in the system's output, or whether the firm would have been named without it.
Claims of the form “get listed on X and AI will recommend you” require experimental evidence that observational data cannot provide. FirmRanker reports observed patterns and states their limits.
